The Superior Chamber of Commerce, with the support of the Town of Superior, and LOST (Legends of Superior Trails), is proud to announce this new event in Superior — Arizona for that matter! The sport, known as BurroCross, is Arizona’s version of the popular sport of Pack Burro Racing that has been enjoyed in Colorado for over 70 years! This will be the inaugural BurroCross event and the first Pack Burro Race in Arizona. There will be 60 runner / burro teams from all over the Southwest that will be starting their cross country trail race right down Main Street on October 12th. The Pre-Race Ceremony will start at 9 AM and the race will begin at 10 AM. While the race is in progress Main Street will host vendors, a beer garden, music, and other fun activities for all ages to enjoy while we wait for the teams to return to town to cross the finish line. This event is a spectator event and you won’t want to miss it!!

The map shows the routes of the race. The directions follow:
Long Course (approximately 12 miles, red line), Short Course (approximately 6 miles, yellow line) and the Fun Run (approximately 3 miles, green line) will all start together at 10 am in front of the Chamber building, 165 W Main St. They will head west down Main St; turn left (S) at Stone, turn right (W) at Brown, turn left (S) on Belmont, cross Sunset and run to the southeast to cross to the SW corner of the Little League property, turn right (W), and cross the vacant lot, exiting at the E end of O’Donnell, and continue West on O’Donnell.

At the intersection of O’Donnell, Panther Drive and Sunset, the Fun Run will turn right (N) on Sunset, continue to Belmont, turn left and return the way they came until they get to Main St. where they will cross Main St. to Porphyry, turn right (E) on Porphyry to Magma, right (S) on Magma to Main St. where they will turn right (W) to the finish line. The Long and Short Courses will continue W from the O’Donnell, Panther Drive and Sunset intersection on Panther Dr turning left (S) at the Fire Station (Golf Course Rd.) and will proceed from there into the Tonto National Forest. The entire trail will be marked, so if you see survey flags pinned to bushes during the weekend, please don’t remove them. The Long and Short Courses will have the same return route through town as the Fun Run until they reach Main St where they will cross Main St to Porphyry (Short Course, yellow line) or Copper (Long Course, red line) turn right (E) to Magma, right (S) on Magma to Main St and right (W) on Main St to the finish line.

Spectators may sit or stand along the route until it goes into the USFS area. For safety reasons and because there won’t be much opportunity to view the runners, we discourage spectators in the Tonto National Forest portion of the course.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DOGS TO THE EVENT. We love your dog but burros do not. As gentle as they are with people, burros have a natural aversion and defensive reaction to canines. If you live in the vicinity of the race please be sure your dogs are contained during the entire race, which could last as late as 6 pm.
