The Arboretum was created as a museum of living plants to help instill in humanity an appreciation of plants.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum is Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden. Cooperatively managed by the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Arizona State Parks, this venerable 320-acre "Arizona oasis" has more than two miles of paths and trails winding through colorful gardens, woodlands and along native riparian habitat.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum is 55 miles east of Phoenix, in the Arizona Upland division of the Sonoran Desert. It is located near U.S. Highway 60 milepost #223 on the south side of the road, three miles west of the historic copper-mining town of Superior, in Pinal County. The Arboretum lies along Queen Creek, an intermittent desert stream which flows through a picturesque canyon. The Arboretum is nestled against the base of the 4400-foot-high Picketpost Mountain. Elevation in the gardens is 2,400 feet.
